Caroline's paintings focus on human representation. By deliberately finding the often-overlooked details and idiosyncrasies of her subject matter, and delicately rendering them studiously and methodically, she creates subversive, sometimes humorous and intricate representations. The cropping of the subject and often the large scale give a challenging edge to her paintings, whilst also revealing a delicacy and honesty.
Caroline attempts to give the portraits life through use of colour and depiction of skin tone and texture - the detail of the work belies its painterly qualities closer inspection reveals textural brushstrokes and a layered surface quality beyond simple representation. Working close-up on a large scale, depiction of each part of the figure becomes an abstract concept; each part broken down into lines, curves, juxtaposed colours and marks, only to become part of a whole at a later stage.
Caroline's portraits defiantly reveal each individuality and imperfection of the sitter. She is looking to give a humanity to her work, not to flatter but to celebrate what makes a person distinct.
